Incantation

by Liana Hemmett
(1/10/01)

As you wake I whisper a charm
in your mind and hold you there,
spellbound. Your clothes on the floor

lazing

twisted inside rose perfumed incense.
Your wristwatch graciously awaits you.
A coffee cup in the sink

abandoned

I run my tongue around its edge,
press my lips against where you drank.
Every hour observes your day in detail.

blankly

The TV stares back at you, unseeing,
ungrateful; I'm jealous
of its nearness to you. I inhale

deeply

swallow you. I move
inside your day; I become the woman
in the shop where you buy oranges;

pressing

change into your palm and trailing
my fingers past your wrist. I am
the indolent cat outside your house

stretching

in the sun. I am the music
you love threading, swirling and twisting
around in your mind. I hear

every

word you unfold and waste.
I spread myself around around your walls
The illumination in your mind,
The portrait in your soul
