Night Stanzas

Selene

by A.E. Baer
(11/03/10)

Radio love
Streams out of that soft box on the night stand
While you with your marble finger
Lying there in lime panties and lace
Roll over to turn up the volume
So we can better hear that Boston with its electric machete
Hack its way through a jungle of mesh and watt amp
And god you're lying on your stomach curving like a moon valley
As gorgeous as a goddess in a bed of pine under an ancient eclipse
With sun and Selene twisting like embers in the hearth of a mountain cabin
And becoming celestial lamplight against your snowflake skin
And I've never felt so in love, so envious
Or so wanting in my entire life
Because I prefer lying here naked with you
Over anything else on this dustbowl planet
And when I slip my soul under the lace
And find Babylonian hanging gardens
Moroccan deserts and Thai temples
Caught under a diamond dusk the color of solar fire and spun web
I can barely believe let alone breathe
That a flawed cutlass man like myself
With dry fingers and dry eyes and a dry mouth
Could ever be blessed by someone like you
So goddamn beautiful and perfect even in your imperfection
And there's nothing about you
Not a memory, not even a moment in the now or the future
That would change my mind
Nor is there a moment where I'm there beside you
Where I would ever want it to end
Or desire anything else
Because you are my only honest beauty
Delicate in how your body twists and curves and winds
Like canyons cut through mauve stone
Sea cliffs in Peruvian bubble gum slate
The Sistine on the ceiling aperture of my heart and soul
Where I lie and stare into
Wanting nothing more than another night with you
To bury inches of my skin into yours
And disappear under the morning fog of eternal love
Because you love, my Artemis, my Iris, my Mata Hari
Have saved me
And I've become your lullaby Endymion
And you -- my pagan moon
And one of the warmest nights in my entire life
Was making firework love in the hotel with you
To old radio music, to shower water against a plastic basin,
To sheets moving like fingers across a harp
To you and I laughing and in love
Our lips like velcro, like candle wax, like gypsy magic
Or rainwater slipping down limestone at dawn
Two bodies, two souls -- becoming one
With nothing and no one to break us.
