What can I say about my work? I am a writer who fell into the act of
illustrating my words. I felt that I could tell my tales through text
but also relax my readers' thoughts with a drawing; and then move their
thoughts on to the next page with the next set of words. I felt that by
illustrating my work, I could express my thoughts in a multilingual way
without writing a word.
When I created my first chapbook, Eclipse, I realized that I needed to see some illustrations in this book, and I then began the task of exorcising drawings from my desk drawers and laying them together with my words.
I don't think when I draw, I just let my hand slide across the page and imagine form without forcing a thing. I then match my drawing with words and sometimes I don't try to match them at all -- I want contrasting thoughts to sit next to each other, like new lovers unable to tell how their relationship is going to work. I never thought of myself as a visual artist, partly because, being raised in Paris, I was exposed to so much great art that I would have never been so bold as to assume I could match such talents. I migrated to photography and became quite good at that medium, but writing kept claiming me back. I did not try to pursue my writing until I turned thirty years old -- that's when I realized that I had denied myself too many pleasures in my life. I have been amazed at the response to the line drawings, because they are so simple. I just draw with my subconscious, and my hand directs the tale of those lines into what you see before you. |
