The word Yoni originally comes from the Sanskrit language; a language composed specifically to record religious and ritual traditions and their content. The Yoni is the symbolic center of one of the world's oldest and most widespread religions, a religion that focuses on women and the Goddess, a religion which incorporates and celebrates sexuality.

Yoni is a term used by many when referring to female genitalia. The choice to use this term rather than any from our Western languages seems to many women a natural one, considering that yoni carries neither an undercurrent of clinical detachment, as does vulva or vagina, nor any of the pornographic, immature and often derogatory connotations that colloquial words such as cunt, pussy, or similar terms do.

Adapted from The Yoni by Rufus Camphausen, a well researched and beautifully written history.
